Online distance learning does not totally nullify interaction with an instructor or with other students. The internet provides the instructor and the student with several tools that stimulate, almost perfectly, a face to face interaction. Webcasting is a relatively new mode of instructing online students that has broadened the interactive band of distance learning. Several distance learning courses still require that you come to the college at least twice in the duration of the course. A few institutions also insist that you write your final exams on the college grounds, but that can be understood. There are today almost as many private institutions that offer distance learning as there are public ones. Because of the lucrative nature of the program, many more strive for the certification to award certificates, diplomas, and degrees. The governments that handle these certifications in most countries however, wisely limit this so as to keep it competitive. Lectures on teacher education, science education, and rural development, as well as programs in agriculture for farmers, creative writing, or even mass communication, are all still delivered via radio in some places. This despite the fact that technology has brought about many changes that can and are being adopted by distance education. Several universities insist on their student coming on-campus for examinations, even if they are on distance education programs. They are particularly fussy about final examinations before the award of a degree. Since the degree goes a long way to symbolize the worth of the school, they realize it is something they cannot afford to trifle with. Distance learning cannot be completed if you are not in the right frame of mind for it. Distance learning students need to realize that they will not be able to interact with fellow students or the instructor like an on campus program lets them. So, it takes a great deal of control of yourself to be able to engage successfully in distance learning programs. A lot of audio and video cassettes have been used in the past. One daunting fact that limited them was their cost and bulk. Electronic technology has PDAs, mp3 players, etc., today that continue to proliferate distance learning in a way that is bigger than what used to avail through the course of the three centuries the practice has been on. Everybody can now do distance learning without breaking their backs.
