What's A Vintage Apron Got To Do With It?

We're all familiar with cooking aprons, but the reality is that aprons have a lot more uses than just the simple kitchen apron. To define an apron, one might say that it is a protective garment worn over the clothes that covers the front of the body and ties in the back. This rather rudimentary design is one that has applications in my field. In some cases, the protective nature is specifically for the clothing being worn underneath, to keep them safe from spills, being torn, etc. These aprons are usually made from cloth, and in some cases are part of a uniform, such as for nurses, waitresses or domestic workers.

On the other hand, some industries require aprons less for the protection of clothing, and more for the protection of the people wearing said clothing. Think of the lead aprons that an x-ray technician dons before taking an x-ray, or the rubber aprons worn by chemists who are working with dangerous chemicals. Other examples might include the leather aprons worn by blacksmiths. All in all, aprons are not just fashion accessories (think vintage aprons), they are in fact, vital parts of the safety equipment used by many in their profession.

Still, there is something to be said for the re-emergence of the vintage apron and the hostess apron. If you think of that classic 40s and 50s housewife look, you may resent the implications that wearing an apron means being the woman of the house. If that is the case, then you've missed a few waves of feminism. Being a stay-at-home mother who manages the home is no longer the anti-feminist choice that early women claimed it to be. After all, in most all of nature, the animal that gives birth to the children is usually the one who nurtures them through those early stages. I did say usually, but as both in humans and in the animal kingdom, there are some very different variations.

That being said, women today and are finding that they can put on just about any apron they want, and be respected for it. Whether they are wearing a kitchen apron while cooking dinner for their family, or a rubber apron while doing chemical research, both applications of the self are worthwhile as long as they are in alignment with that person's highest good. And of course, it would just be wrong not to mention how many grilling aprons for men you'll find on the shelves in today's stores.
