What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Lasers are everywhere these days, used for both reconstructive and cosmetic medical procedures. Lasers can improve skin tone, reduce scars and remove fat. However, what do lasers have to do with hair removal?

Lasers shoot concentrated light beams that can be aimed at almost anything for every purpose, from diminishing fine lines to dissolving fat. The type and strength of the beam, the length of time it remains on the target and how it is directed dictates the effect. Properly used, a laser pulse can burn hair down to the follicle without harming the skin. This kills the root and makes the hair removal permanent. That means no more nicks and cuts from shaving, rashes from depilatories, or wiry, neglected legs.

The first thing that is necessary to laser hair removal is pigment, or melanin in the hair, as the color is what absorbs the light from the laser beam. The hair must be of a darker color than the skin. If you are blonde, you may have to lose your tan before you seek laser hair removal.

The way it works is that laser pulse finds the hair and heats it up without damaging the skin. This is called photoepilation - literally hair removal by light. A cooling system is provided to keep the skin protected, but it is still a very delicate procedure that only an expert should perform. Other types of light pulse devices can be used, but the laser is the most precise.

The laser can remove hair from almost any section of the body, including legs, bikini line, back and upper lip. Only the vicinity of the eye should be avoided. The process of laser hair removal goes fairly quickly, depending on the size of the area from which the hair is being removed. It should not take more than an hour. Between three and five treatments are recommended for best results, though touch-ups will probably be needed as well. The hair will be thinner and less noticeable, but might not be completely eliminated.
