What You Need To Know To Make Ponds Survive?

The pond owners need to have knowledge about the pond ecosystems and hazards of neglecting the maintenance of the pond.

Ponds, like people, need Oxygen to Survive, shows the importance of oxygen level for all living creatures present on earth. Similarly for pond ecosystem, it’s necessary to maintain the proper level of the dissolved oxygen. This factor needs to be monitored for maintaining the healthy ecosystem in the pond. The amount of dissolved oxygen is determined in terms of ppm. This factor ppm; i.e. parts per millions determines the adequate amount of dissolved oxygen in the pond ecosystem. The dissolved oxygen that is typically required is 4 to 5 ppm.

What Makes Pond Owners Tense?

There are a number of critical disturbing factors for the pond owners regarding the amount of dissolved oxygen. The depletion of dissolved oxygen level can result in dangerous scenarios such as fish kills. The fish considered one of the important creatures in the ponds, are greatly affected due to depletion of dissolved oxygen level in the ponds. This unbalance in the dissolved oxygen level in the pond may be due to factors like large growth of algae; i.e. algae bloom, decay of water weeds after treatment with herbicides or run off of the livestock waste and organic materials after heavy thunder showers.

The major factor for oxygen depletion these days are algae bloom. Initially to identify algae bloom is quite difficult for the pond owners to prevent further degrading of the pond ecosystem. The algae bloom notifies excessive growth of the algae which results in the reduction of amount of dissolved oxygen available for other creatures living in the pond ecosystem. The algae bloom can be made out by noticing the pea green color of the pond surface.

So, the pond owners have to take utmost care in this regard .The other hampering factor for degrading of dissolved oxygen level is overuse of the excessive fertilizers used in the ponds. As excessive use of anything results in hazardous effect, it’s a word of advice for not only new pond owners but also for the people owning ponds for a long time.

The factor like farm run off water or wastes including organic material or even fertilizers run off like phosphates, nitrites, nitrates are also dangerous not only for killing the pond creatures but also depleting the dissolved oxygen level in water. These also affect the phytoplanktons or simply known as microscopic plant kingdom. These microscopic plant kingdoms are also responsible for properly maintaining the oxygen level and also aeration level in the pond. These generate adequate amount of oxygen level in the pond. Even excessive growth of this phytoplankton can reduce the dissolved oxygen level in the ponds.

Solutions For Pond Owners
One of the best ways to get rid of all the problems related to dissolved oxygen level in the pond is to use pond aerators. The pond aerators diffuse the oxygen into every part of the pond maintaining a healthy oxygen rich ecosystem. Thus a good pond aerator solves the problems of fish kills, stimulation of beneficial aerobic bacteria, controlling algae bloom and helping in prevention of turnovers and improved overall water quality.
