There are a few different calorie counter tools on the market, so which ones actually work and which ones are you wasting your time with? We have checked them all out for you, to let you know both the best free and paid sites.

Free Calorie Counter Sites:
Spark People
Probably the most well known calorie counter site is Spark People.com and has a comprehensive range of calorie counter tools including both foods and exercise. They also have a range of forums and discussion boards for support. The site has a fantastic array of recipes and meal plans and is certainly worth checking out.

About.com
About.com has a calorie counter tool (caloriecounter.about.com) and is a good free tool to have a play around on. However it lacks the structure of Spark People and does not effectively allow you to track your daily calorie intake or expenditure.

Paid Sites:
eDiets
eDiets is probably the largest online weight loss company in the world and is publicly listed in the US. It has an enormous range of meal plans as well as nutritionist support and meal delivery to support these programs. However, in terms of a calorie counter it does not really closely monitor the calories you have eaten and calories you have burnt. It is better if you just want to follow a meal plan.

Biggest Loser Club
The Biggest Loser Club has a new program that works as an effective calorie counter. The program provides both meal and exercise plans and track the calories of both. At $50 a month, there are other sites that do the same for less.

Australian Lifestyle & Fitness
This is probably the strongest Calorie Counter site on the web. It has a comprehensive range of meal and exercise plans and is very user friendly. It has calorie counter tools that tracks both your food and exercise and then predicts your weight loss based on your plan. At $21 per month it is also great value.

Diet Watch
The Diet Watch calorie counter tool is very much an older version of the Australian Lifestyle & Fitness system. It provides both meal and exercise plans and the tracking of both calories eaten and expended. The reporting features are not particularly strong and the design is not overly intuitive.

There is a large variety of calorie counter sites on the web and the best thing is to check them all out and see for yourself which ones work the best for you. For a free calorie counter you should definitely check out Spark People and then Australian Lifestyle & Fitness for a more comprehensive tool.
