Napster has recently announced it will now be offering MP3 downloads. Never a company to be left behind, the pioneer in music downloading is eager to face this new market challenge. Per their CEO and Chairman, Chris Gorog, I am happy with the progress that Napster has made. No doubt, Gorog is counting on continued success in the MP3 offerings Napster is set to launch also. Napster is not nearly the whole story when it comes to the MP3 revolution. Though leaders at first in music sharing, they were beaten to the punch by others when offering MP3 files for download. Internet Underground Music Archive, MP3.com, LiquidAudio and RealAudio were offering MP3 downloads first. Because they have been available for a longer period of time and have massive libraries of MP3 downloads available, these three will prove worthy competition for Napster. There are also some cutting-edge musical artists who offer MP3 download from their websites; their scope is limited, however, so poses a smaller threat. Napster will be joining other sites that have been offering MP3 downloads for some time, including: MP3.com, RealAudio, LiquidAudio and others. Napster does have name recognition in the music download world; it is only the availability of MP3 downloads that will be new to their loyal customers. Most other sites represent a moderate level of competition; its Steve Jobs iTunes Music Store that will provide the biggest challenge. Not everyone thinks Napster can make a go of it in this new realm. Among the skeptics is Mr. Robert Enderle (Principle Analyst for the Enderle Group). Enderle has said I just dont see many iPod or iTunes users shifting to Napster since iTunes software is so integrated with Apple music. Apples ability to dominate the MP3 market is due to the unprecedented success of their MP3 player, the iPod. While other companies (like Zune) produce MP3 players, no one can begin to approach Apples success in this arena. It is true that Apple has a significant edge when it comes to MP3 players and the popularity of the iTunes Music store. Napster knows this, however, and seems undaunted by it. Thanks to the can do attitude of their CEO, Chris Gorog, Napster will give it all theyve got to own their share of this important market. Just who would be the wrong competition? Most experts agree that the popularity of Apple iPods and the iTunes music store is beyond competing with. Per Enderle I cant picture many iPod and iTunes users shifting to Napster since iTunes software is so integrated with Apple music. Besides, what would compel iTunes users to leave them? Not much, it seems; iPod and iTunes users are very loyal and have a high degree of trust in the quality of and in the services they provide. Chris Gorog, CEO of Napster, recently said he was happy with the progress of his company. He also said he felt better now that Napster could join music download site giants, like Apple and Amazon on a more level playing field.
