Great news. Cowboy boots aren't just for cowboys and western wear enthusiasts anymore! Wearing cowboy boots has become a fashion trend for people who would not normally wear them--people like celebrities, runway models, and normal folk like you and I. These days, people tend to wear cowboy boots more for their appearance than for their function. However, many people believe that cowboy boots are just as comfortable as a pair of sneakers, and as striking as their best high heels. In response to this trend, many designers are making boots in more colors and styles than would normally be seen on the range or on the trail. Fashionable cowboy boots may also include some ornate designs and extra embellishments, depending on the whimsy of the designer and/or the wearer. Over the past 30-40 years, cowboy boots have become quite popular, to the point where they have been seen adorning the feet of New York City runway models and Hollywood celebrities (and I don't mean Gene Autry and Roy Rogers). Their popularity has been fueled by designers such as Michael Kors, who personally coined the term "sundance chic," and Ralph Lauren, who made cowboy boots and jeans his personal trademark. The recent trend in cowboy boots and other aspects of traditional western wear can be attributed to the increased desire to emphasize and celebrate the American identity. When we think of things in fashion that are strictly American, we usually think of western apparel, and more specifically, cowboy boots. Of course, the standard cowboy boots of traditional brown leather have evolved with the use of exotic fabrics and varying color combinations. This leeway for creative license only adds to the appeal of the footwear, as there are so many interesting and unique looks that can be achieved with a pair of cowboy boots. People who wear cowboy boots strictly for fashion purposes are more likely to choose boots made from exotic skins and leathers. These usually include such skins as ostrich, alligator, stingray, elk, python, lizard, and goat. When it comes to how they are worn, tall boots are popular among women, and it is a big no-no to tuck them into your jeans--this was a style popularized during the 1980s and will really "date" you were you to be caught sporting your boots in such a manner. Young children and teenagers have even gotten caught up in this classic western wear trend, often sporting cowboy boots with duck-billed toes and bright, iridescent colors.
