At one time a really good music collection might consist of 100 or so albums, cassette tapes or CDs. Now, thanks to public domain music downloads available via the World Wide Web that would be considered a modest collection. With the millions of songs, from thousands of artists that are available for you to download you can increase your music collection many times over. Whats more some of the public domain music downloads are offered free of charge. Other downloads are available at a fraction of the cost of a single album or CD. Which music downloads are legal AND free? As a rule of thumb, legal music which is freely distributed comes from the copyright holders of the music. Many university websites allow you to download their orchestral or band music at no charge and the quality is usually very good. Some free downloads are offered directly by the recording artist. These artists allow songs (or partial) songs to be downloaded from their website. Obviously, it is a sales gimmick if you like what you hear, you are likely to buy the whole CD or album. On the other hand, it is not a bad way to test out a track before you make the investment. The heavy metal band, Metallica, offers some free samples but also allows you to purchase their singles or albums directly from their official website. If you have a favorite band or bands, its worth visiting their websites. They may have some free tunes you can listen to or download. If you have never downloaded public domain music before, dont be intimidated. It is a simple process that requires just a few easy steps. If you are not exactly sure what the term download means, here is a simple definition: Download (whether they are music, text or data files) refers to transferring the files from a computer which is hooked-up to the internet or website to a users computer. So, you access a downloading site or website and transfer it to your computer. Once on your computer, you can save it to a disk or to a portable device the most popular being the Mp3 player. Public domain music download sites are all over the internet. If you just search public domain music download, you will receive links to dozens of sites. Many of these sites cater to a certain type of music, i.e. Country, Jazz, Rock, Blues, etc. Other sites carry many genres of music. Another option many music lovers choose is to download music from internet sites specifically designed for this purposes. Napster-Tunes is a favorite, offers a collection of over 5 Million songs and 250 genres. Napster allows interested consumers to participate in a two-week trial period during which time you can download songs for free.
