Rare old school IT professionals still remember the practical value of early screensavers. As the Cold war was starting to loose on heat, the first personal computers were born. From the beginning of early computers till now, the amount of hours people world wide spend glued on their monitors has risen dramatically. Back than in late 20th century screensavers were born for a simple reason. It had nothing to do with the computer itself. Late 80s computer monitors were, regarding the technology, like prehistoric visitors. PC screens that were left on for hours were subject to a danger of permanent damage. A phenomenon called phosphoric burn would cause the last picture on your screen to burn into the surface of the monitor and stay there forever. Regardless the fact that monitors quickly became a mass production product, there still were no cheap and reliable answers to that issue. For those days a hardware solution simply could not be produced. An ingenious software solution was born. The era of screensavers began. At the start it was just letters or simple signs cruising through screen or bouncing around. We can question ourselves if it makes sense to continue using screensavers while each personal computer today offers an option to turn off monitor automatically when inactive. However you look at it, leaving a blank screen when going out for a coffee is just no fun at all. Not only has their function changed. The progress on animation software for screensavers has opened a whole new world of possibilities. Evolution of this software has shown that addressing our feelings is the way to go. From trivial graphic and programmable fonts to photo slideshows, animations and sound, screensavers seem to evolve in a completely new media. Internet made it possible to spread the newest animated screensavers in matter of seconds all round the globe. Animated screensavers are for example becoming more and more similar to a movie. Animated or slideshow, downloaded or self made, screensavers will continue to come in all sorts of packaging, but they will be more and more niche oriented in terms of themes as well as in terms of different features. Free animated screensavers, free funny screensavers, all those freebie searches on the web seem not to harm continuous investments in better, more interesting and even more interactive screensavers. We live in the society where all payable software solutions have their free alternatives. Majority of web searches for screensavers is concentrated on words free and animated. Obviously there still is a niche for freeware in this field. Whichever way the future of screensavers my take us; it seems the user will continue to enjoy free products for a long time to come.
