Accessing and managing remote teams is quite a daunting task with a number of small-large organizations following the pattern of having remote teams. When the teams are spread across different geographical locations, it becomes difficult to keep a tab on them and also get the work done through them. The remote teams are mostly found in IT organizations and home–based offices. It definitely requires some special techniques to successfully manage remote teams. Although there are many benefits to having remote teams, there too are numerous pitfalls. One of the major pitfalls is the barriers to communicate which are created due to the difference of time zones in different locations and also due to the culture and language. The remote teams may be performing well, still managing them is difficult because of the distance gap. With cost-saving existing technology like VOIP, a team member can always stay connected to the organization but certain instances of work require face-to-face meetings. But, this and all other problems can be sorted out by adopting certain strategies and implementing them successfully. Tips to manage the remote teams: * Have clear goals: Although every good organization has a well-defined goals which are to met by the team members, in case of remote teams it is all the more essential. If the goals to be met with each team member are properly set, and the teams should be instructed to abide by the goals. Make sure that the goals should be realistic and achieveable. Proper time-frame must be given to these remote employees as “out of sight is out of mind” and these employees may have the tendency to avoid the work at times. * Remove the barriers to communication: The greatest barrier to communication is of course distance in the case of remote teams and so this can be tackled by adopting other means such as regularly teleconferencing, videoconferencing or using a combination of theses methods. If possible, arrange for face-to-face meetings atleast once or twice in a month because nothing can be better than this. * Display efficient leadership: Although leadership is required even in normal cases and exists across all verticals, an able and exquisite leadership is all the more important to the remote teams. The remote workers should always be kept in the loop for whatever decisions at the top level is being taken and the information should be rightly conveyed to them. * Monitor the performance of remote teams: The performance of remote teams can be monitored by checking regularly their reporting status through emails and voice mails. The supervisors should be on their toes to guide these teams and if any discrepancy accrues, they should be tackled by proper means and one of which could be rewarding the ones who perform well. Above all, the remote teams should be given the proper feedback and their problems should be discussed at length. In any case, the negative approach towards them does not work and the best way to manage them is to tackle them in a positive manner. This also requires building a good trust and relationship with these remote employees. Last but not the least you must always keep your eyes open.
