Take what you know about the benefits of yoga for adults, apply that to children, and think about the result of such an equation. The value of yoga for children is quite remarkable. Children who practice yoga may not only be more capable of regulating their emotions, managing stress, and calming themselves as research now shows that they may also choose better foods to eat and engage in more physical activity than children who do not.

Poor eating habits and body image issues plague our children today. This is just another thing that yoga for children can possibly remedy. A recent study looked at the benefits of yoga for adolescents plagued with eating disorders. The teens in the study attended yoga classes as part of their psychiatric treatment program. Typically suffering from poor self esteem, nearly 75% of the teens reported an increase in well being. They used the words "calm," "relaxed," "energized," and "more awake" to describe how they felt after yoga class.

Other studies on yoga for children and adolescents have reported positive results when it came to using yoga to alleviate and prevent depression, anxiety, mood regulation, trauma, self esteem, and an overall increased sense of wellness. Many teachers and parents who have tried yoga for children have reported improved strength, flexibility, focus, and balance, as well as a better sense of pride and self-awareness in their children.

So what are some ways you can bring the gift of yoga into the lives of the youth you care about? Well, for one thing, why not give yoga in the classroom a try if you're a teacher. Even as a parent, you can suggest the idea to your children's teacher or school, or you can take matters into your own hands and practice yoga with your children at home with the guidance of a kids' yoga DVD. By introducing yoga to your children, you are giving them a fun, healthy activity that they can cultivate and use for the rest of their lives. Start giving them valuable life skills and healthy ideas about life now, and watch them over the years as they grow into healthy adults--body, mind and spirit. Why deny children a gift like that when you know you're going to have fun doing it too!
