Kids are bound to come home with headlice is they attend any kind of school or daycare center. Then the kids transmit the lice to their parents. Discovering that you have lice might be a source of embarrassment, but it affects nearly every person at some time or another and is nothing to be ashamed of. One gets head lice by direct or indirect contact with someone else that has lice. Once someone in a family comes in contact with lice, it spreads quickly to other family members and friends that those people spend time with. Lice can live on hats, clothing, and furniture for up to 3 days without human contact, leaving the unsuspecting victim often clueless as to how the lice was caught. Taking steps to prevent head lice is imperative. Most preschools and daycare centers keep the children's hats and coats in a spot where they will not come into contact with another child's garments. You most also look at sporting equipment, especially protective headgear; lice can be transmitted easily from one head to another. Each person has her own method of removing lice. Several doctors believe that the best treatment for head lice is by buying prescription chemicals, which a person having lice applies and leaves on the hair for some time before washing it. Later the eggs of the lice have to be removed from the hair by combing with a fine toothed comb. Organic products provide alternative methods of treating louse. Many methods use specially manufactured organic shampoos or lotions, and still other methods provide instructions for using other household goods rather than the harsher chemicals prescribed by many doctors. An example of this last method is soaking hair in baby or vegetable oil overnight. This is said to smother the lice, thus killing the infestation. The lice which appear in one type of hair are quite separate from pubic lice. Since the bugs are different, they must be managed in a unique manner. Keep in mind that the presence of lice in one place is not indicative of an infestation elsewhere.
