Gym Equipment - Lets Get Started

Author:  Edson Buchanan   2008-04-23  Word Count: 528  Category: Fitness Equipment  Print  Copy

Every year you vow to get in shape, but for some reason, you never follow through. Although you obtain a gym membership, you never go to the gym because even though you have the time, you are too tired or you have painful memories of how sore you were after your first (and maybe only) workout. So, due to the membership contract, the gym keeps drafting $40 charges each month. You are allowed to cancel at any time, but you don't because you are sure you're going back to the gym!
What is your activity level like? Are you one of those couch potatoes watching television for hours on end? It is not really all your fault. Some of the blame belongs to the exercise field. Like other businesses, gymnasiums are working to earn dollars. If you have a very high degree of motivation, health fitness clubs are wonderful, full of helpful (and not necessarily helpful) gym equipment. But the majority of us find that these places only want to get large enrollment fees and don't really encourage us to come there often. Both commercial space and gym equipment are costly.
But how did the hyper motivated get to be hyper motivated, I'm sure you're asking. Success, more than anything else, breeds confidence and motivation. And that success can start at home. It doesn't take much to turn your living room or garage or backyard into a gym. The trick is in starting with only what you need, and doing a little every day.
I have already tried using a home gym. The equipment comes with a cable and pulley and looks more like a medieval torture device than gym equipment. I have now turned it into a clothes rack and the same treatment was meted out to an exercise bike with the moving handlebars, the great whacking fan for the front wheel, and no rear wheel. I now use it to dry towels after a shower.
But I'm just talking about the stuff you use, not fancy fitness equipment. To get started, you should try some basic exercises such as pushups or deep knee bends; however, it is important to make sure that you are using proper form. Your knees should not hurt. Another option is to purchase a duffel bag from your local military supply store, along with some 50 lb bags of playground sand from the home supply store. Separate the sand into 5 lb portions using plastic bags wrapped with duct tape, and load them into the bag. Exercise by lifting the bag from the ground to overhead and back again. Even if you get an expensive duffel bag, this should only cost you around $25.
After you've started making some progress, purchase a low-cost barbell set, and consider adding a way for you to get the bar off the ground so you can try some barbell squats and standing military presses. It is not necessary or worth it to get a dedicated bench press. Just remember, though, you should put off working out until you've had a physical exam from your doctor.
