Granite counters have been around far longer than people actually think. However; it is only in recent decades that the technology was developed to mass produce and process the sheet granite in such a way as to make them affordable for so many of todays home owners.

The Look and Feel of Granite

Theres just no doubt about and that is that they really do look and feel nice but are they as cost effective as other types of counter tops may be in your specific home? Also, what about wear? Do they wear as well as other types of materials that now being used to make counters?

They Can Scratch and Chip

The fact, is that if a granite counter top is well maintained, it can last forever but the key phrase here is “well maintained”. This means that they can't be cut on and also if they are chipped in any way, you are pretty much stuck with the chip that is in it.

Don't Believe the Radiation Nonsense

Also, some mention has been made that granite counters can emit radiation. While this is technically true, the amount that they emit is so minimal it really is negligible. Also, it is important to remember that virtually everything on this planet emits radiation to some degree or another.

Iron Makes for Darker Color

The most expensive granite for counter tops will be the darker colors, with black granite being the most expensive. This is due to the fact that it is “iron” in the granite that give it its dark coloration. The more iron in the granite, the more difficult it is to cut and polish, so this is why you will always pay more for dark granite counter tops.

Fit the Granite Counters to the Value of the Home

If you want to see the maximum return on your investment in granite counters, purchase and install them to fit the value of your home accordingly. This means that if your home is moderately priced, you should choose moderately priced granite counter tops. Spending a huge amount of money on top grade granite counter tops for a “first time buyer” home just doesn't make any economical sense.
