This is due to the fact that it is “iron” in the granite that give it its dark coloration. The more iron in the granite, the more difficult it is to cut and polish, so this is why you will always pay more for dark granite counter tops.

Fit the Granite Counters to the Value of the Home

If you want to see the maximum return on your investment in granite counters, purchase and install them to fit the value of your home accordingly. This means that if your home is moderately priced, you should choose moderately priced granite counter tops. Spending a huge amount of money on top grade granite counter tops for a “first time buyer” home just doesn't make any economical sense.
