Freeware games are very popular on the Internet. Typing the word "games" on a search engine will offer you loads of web sites, where each gives you different kinds of games. Everything can be found, from online golf games to rpg online games. This can be very entertaining, but at the same time you mustn't forget about safety rules while playing.
Most game creators are good people that are only interested in creating good games for people to enjoy. Unfortunately there are others that try to harm people by disguising malware as games. Malware is a term to encompass a variety of harmful or just unwanted programs people try to sneak onto your computer. Some cause pop-up advertising to appear as you browse the web while others try to steal your personal information like passwords or bank account and credit card numbers.
Most things on the Internet have a certain risk, and pursuing freeware games are no exception. There are two basic categories of games: those you download to your computer, and those you play in a Web browser. Malware can lurk in either category; fortunately, there are ways you can prevent being infected.
You need to only download freeware games from sites whose content can be trusted. These sites have a quality reputation that is not in doubt. These sites only offer games that contain no malware and often state so in their downloading page. Less well-known sites, many not be bad sites, but often are not as safe.
Try to avoid websites with multiple pop up ads, even if you don't plan on downloading anything. A number of these sites will attempt to install viral software onto your computer without you knowledge, something you certainly do not want. There is a fine line between aggressive marketing and intrusive advertising that is not truly legitimate.
If you do, in fact, discover that you have downloaded a game that contains malware, run anti-virus and anti-malware software immediately. There are several great utilities available on the Internet to clear your PC, and some of them are even free. If you have any doubts, however, about what you are doing, consult a professional. With the more powerful programs, in particular, you could cause more problems than you'd solve.
Above all, keep in mind that the amount of games with malware is ultimately a small percentage. You can find plenty of great freeware games that are safe for your computer too. However, since the risk is out there, it makes sense to protect your system. No game is worth the aggravation of having to spend hours cleaning up the mess it made of your PC.
