Have you ever been on a diet, going well and then a craving get the better of you. You over indulge in chocolate, ice cream or your favourite treat. You’re not alone. Cravings are one of the biggest things the lead to diet failure. However, don’t think you are weak because you have these cravings. diet cravings are normal urges. What you need to do is try and prevent these urges. 1. Cravings generally occur when you are hungry The easiest way to avoid cravings is to have regular meals and snacks throughout the day. Most people fall into the temptation of snacking when they are hungry. If you are not constantly hungry you will be far more likely not to give into your cravings. 2. Increase your exercise Many people don’t understand this. However many people crave carbohydrates when they feel depressed. Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that makes us feel happy. When our brain is producing low amounts of serotonin we feel depressed. People who struggle with weight tend to use food to comfort themselves. Exercise releases serotonin and makes us feel happy, thus reducing the risk of cravings. 3. Increase yourself concept Our self concept has something to do with cravings. When you don’t feel good about something it can increase the strength of the craving. When you are feeling down use incantations to pick yourself up. Say “I like myself”, “I like myself”. Say it with meaning and feeling. Sounds crazy but it works a treat. I learned this from world renowned author Brian Tracy. 4. Increase your endorphins Sugar and fats are said to release reasonable amounts of endorphins. Thats why we crave them. However we receive far more through exercise. The only sweet i would recommend in moderation is dark chocolate as it is loaded with anti oxidants.
