Dance: Beauty That Can Not Be Captured

Dance is the intersection of movement with expression. It is an art that only requires of you your body. For many trying to dance only confirms that your body is betraying you, betraying that you do not know how to make music sing through your limbs.

That is why I stick to the appreciation of dance as well as occasional secret choreographies I practice in my room. I tried to learn ballet when I was eight and hated it. It is a dance that requires discipline and exactitude.

Now when I see a ballet I am amazed at the strength, the lithe bodies and the beautiful lines the arms make with the legs. Yet it is modern dance that makes my spirit soar. Modern dance has a history that started in the early 20th Century.

One of the first pioneers of modern dance is choreographer and dancer Martha Graham. Some of her more famous pupils are Alvin Ailey, founder of The American Dance Theater, Twyla Tharp, Merce Cunningham and Paul Taylor. In a sense you can still see the dances of previous masters in their students’ movements.

All humans have a desire to dance. It is one of the best ways to express your joy and happiness. I felt this many times, burning through the days and weeks frustrations by dancing happily late into a Friday night.

Watching a dance performance is an altogether different joy than dancing yourself. The music, light and movement of the dancers will inform you. An expression, even one gesture will catch your eye. If you have not seen a dance performance before, I suggest trying a modern performance. Modern dance is full of free movement and expressiveness that is fun for new audience members.

It is interesting to note that when watching a more abstract modern dance, without a recognizable “story,” how your mind tries to construct what is happening. I am always amazed at how primordial the images are that come to me, as if the flowing dancers, the movements and music are portraying some great rebirth.

Dance is as worthy of appreciation as the more popular arts such as music and painting. But unlike music or painting, to see a dance is to witness its creation and death. Dance can be preserved in a recording, but the full experience can not be recreated. It is here and then it is gone.
