While most types of acne are simply troublesome and at times embarrassing, there are more severe types of acne that can lead to scarring and pitting of the skin. One of the most severe types that acne can take is known as cystic acne, and it is vital that this serious condition be treated at once. Cystic acne results from hair follicles clogged by dead cells or skin oils produced in abundance by sebaceous glands. This produces rupture of the walls of the sebum ducts within the hair follicles and the consequent response of your defensive system with inflammation, rupture of surrounding tissues and thus boil-like lesions. This condition is normally treated with antibiotics and cortisones. If recurrent and nodular cysts form it is treated with isotretinoin drugs that impair the secretion of sebum. Sadly the use of antibiotics has unwanted effects, and cortisones and isotretionoin drugs have awful side effects. As the name suggests, cystic acne is characterized by the appearance of pus filled cysts, and these cysts can easily lead to scarring and other grievous complications. In most cases of cystic acne the cyst can seem like an acne nodule, but it will be filled with pus, and the diameter of the cyst is usually at least 5 millimeters across. In addition to being unsightly, these cysts can be quite painful, and they can lead to serious scarring. For people who suffer from cystic acne it is important never to squeeze the acne cyst, because since the infection itself never actually rises to the surface of the skin, trying to pop a cyst only pushes the infection deeper still. This deep infection can in turn cause a much more painful inflammation, and cause a much longer curing time than if the cyst had been left alone to cure on its own. And can lead to prolonged breakouts and serious scarring. Looking for medical assistance If you believe you are suffering from this painful and serious type of acne you should be checked out thoroughly by a qualified specialist. A good dermatologist will be able to evaluate the acne and tell what type it is, and he or she will also be capable to recommend the solutions that will be most efficient at treating that type of acne and making sure it does not return. There are of course a number of over the counter products created to treat all kinds of acne, and some of them can be quite efficient at treating even the most severe types of acne. When those over the counter solutions are not enough, however, there are a number of prescription acne treatments that may be adequate for severe acne. Again, it is important to consult with your health care professional in order to decide the best acne treatment solutions for your own skin type and type of acne.
