Acne Vulgaris is a common condition that affects a great part of the population. This condition is characterized by blackheads and whiteheads and scars that are left after too much squeezing, picking and pinching. These scars are the final step of the healing process of our body, but is there anything we can do to get rid of these imperfections?
Scars are very usual with acne, although acne can be treated early to prevent the formation of acne scars. Scars can be formed due to a loss of tissue. 'Ice pick' scars fall into this category. They are named because they make your skin look like it has been punctured by an ice pick.
Less common forms of acne scarring are boxcar and rolling scars. Boxcar scars vary in depth and are round to oval indentations. Their edges are vertical, but they don't have the pointed look of ice pick scars. Rolling scars are formed by the adhesion of the surface of the skin to the subcutaneous layer.
Scar Treatments
Different treatments are required by the different types of acne. The range of acne treatments includes laser resurfacing, subcision, and some topical treatments. Sometimes, depending on the type and severity of your acne scars, a combination of treatments is required.
Treatments for ice pick scars are usually dermabrasion and laser resurfacing.
Dermabrasion involves eliminating the top layer of the epidermis with abrasives to get rid of scarring and imperfections. Dermabrasion is useful for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars.
Lasers work by producing an intense beam of bright light that moves in one direction. The laser beam can gently vaporize and/or ablate skin tissue to improve scars.
For those with various types of pigmentation problems linked with acne (like brown spots and white spots - there is an alternative. Acne remedies that contain azaleic acid are useful when treating scars and have shown great improvements in individual's appearance. Solutions that contain azaleic acid can also be helpful to treat acne. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and effectively reduces pigmentation.
It is advisable to take care of your skin condition before you end up with ugly scars or pigmentation problems on your skin complexion. Hope is not loss as there are lots of treatments available to treat acne and remove pigmentation and all types of scars.
